Where We Live
The following maps represent the distribution of
those people with the Pilon family name in each of the four principal countries
in which the name occurs. |
FRANCE -
This map, based on 1996 telephone
listings, represents the current distribution of the Pilon family name in
the Departments of the originating country. As surrounding European
countries have few people with this surname it is believed to be of French
only origin.The red highlighted
Department in south central France is Tarn-et-Garonne. It is here where
the Pilon named is recorded as having originated. In the north however, the
red hightlighted Department of Loir-et-Cher, and its surrounding areas, contain
more Pilons. It is therefore possible, that the Pilon name may have originated
here instead. Please note that the map scale here is different than on the
maps below. |

CANADA - This map, based on 1996 telephone listings, represents
the current distribution of the Pilon family name. Despite the
immigration of the three original French Pilon settlers in the period 1664-88
(all to Montreal, Quebec and only two of which produced children) the name
today is still primarily a Quebecois name. Quebec contains by far the highest
concentration of the Pilon family name of the four principal countries in
which it is found. It is nine times that of the highest concentrations found
in France today . This is due to a very high Canadian population growth
prior to the 20th century and because of the relatively small number of French
settlers/surnames that arrived in Quebec during the pre-1760 colonial period.
The rest of Canada's Pilon distribution occurred primarily in the 19th
century. |

UNITED
STATES - This map, based
on 1990 U.S. census data, represents the only
three
periods of known Canadian Pilon immigration
to the United States, all of which occurred in the 19th century;
-
Michigan,
1847-50:
when there was little additional arable land available in Quebec
to maintain her rapid population growth.
-
Vermont,
c1860's:
when the Industrial
Revolution created more jobs in Vermont than in Quebec and at a time when
there was an open border.
-
Montana and North Dakota,
1885:
when,
during the Canadian western expansion of new European farmers, Canadian
government troops forced the Pilon Metis (a mix of French-Canadian and Native)
off the land they had squatted on as far back as pre-1805.

AUSTRALIA - This map, based on 1996 telephone listings,
represents either American, or more probably Canadian, Pilon immigration
believed to be sometime in the late 19th century. It is assumed he/they first
settled in Tasmania before their descendants moved on to New South
Wales. |

Small numbers of Pilons live in these countries
as well.
