Handwritten Letter mentioning the
Burning of Washington City

during the War of 1812 by British forces.
Side 1
 Side 2

 Aug 28, 1814
(4 days after Washington's burning)

Juliustown, NJ?

A mother writes to her son, "...the intelligence he delivered with it, that the British had burnt the City of Washington....tis a serious time my dear son....not knowing how long I may have a son...".  Much concern about the seriousness of the times.  It was this very burning that necessitated the use of white paint to cover up the fire damage that gave rise to its new name, "The White House". Very historic. Single sheet, fully written on both sides. Some foxing. Rare.
