Handwritten Letter mentioning the |
Aug 28, 1814 |
Juliustown, NJ? |
A mother writes to her son, "...the intelligence he delivered with it, that the British had burnt the City of Washington....tis a serious time my dear son....not knowing how long I may have a son...". Much concern about the seriousness of the times. It was this very burning that necessitated the use of white paint to cover up the fire damage that gave rise to its new name, "The White House". Very historic. Single sheet, fully written on both sides. Some foxing. Rare. |

Chicago |
Banner headline, "HALIFAX, CITY OF 5,000 DEAD". One of the most important events in Canadian history. A collision of 2 ships in the harbor, one filled with 3,000 tons of explosives, that destroyed the city in the world's biggest explosion until the development of nuclear weapons. The massive explosion was followed by a tidal wave, city wide fires and then a crippling snowstorm. Large aerial front page view of the city's damage. Pulp paper of the time causing yellowing and britteness, especially at the edges. A very bold premier headline, highly displayable. |
